Every Infinity Train season has to get depressing at some point. This is season four’s turn and it is creepy. I think it’s honestly one of the most terrifying episodes of the entire show. The Docent is definitely the most terrifying and unsettling denizen in the entire show, beating out the cockroach dogs (gohms) by a mile. At least they have the decency to attack head-on and aren’t made of the arms of previous passengers.

The thing about having two protagonists whose major conflict is with each other is that both sides need to be sympathetic and insufferable. Up until now, Min has been making a lot of sense. He was cautious to enter the swirling fiery vortex that just appeared in front of them and his strict adherence to the rules was needed in baking something edible. But, because he’s been kind of right so much, he’s developed a big head and an even bigger sense of condescension towards Ryan. And I, for one, do not know how Ryan has put up with it for as long as he did.

Season three may be my favorite Infinity Train emotionally, but season four is fun. As bad as the trouble Kez gets Ryan and Min into is in reality, it’s really fun to watch from a distance (until it isn’t). It seems like everyone everywhere hates Kez and not without good reason. She’s like the bastard version of The Cat. She’s been seemingly everywhere but lacks The Cat’s suave and cunning to get herself out of trouble and actually welcomed in some areas. It leads to hilarious situations, though.

It’s final season of Infinity Train. Even if season four wasn’t meant to be the end of the show, I have to admit that there is a bit of poetry in the show ending before season one begins, timeline-wise. It unintentionally makes the show a bit of an infinity itself. The season itself is, as the title “Duet” says, about two boys, Ryan and Ming-Gi who are grappling with the harsh reality of growing up, taking risks, making life choices, and what makes a good friend.

Season three is my favorite Infinity Train season. Not because it’s possibly the darkest season we’ve had or because it’s the only one with a bittersweet ending — I honestly prefer unambiguously happy endings. It’s not even because this season is the most relatable to me, most likely not for the reasons one would think upon reading those words; I’ve never started a Lord of the Flies cult based around dehumanizing people or have had the misfortune of being in an abusive relationship of any sort. I love season three of Infinity Train because it does one of my favorite things: it reforms its characters.

I really like Amelia. She’s an interesting tragedy when she’s drowning in grief and so much fun when she’s able to start moving forward again. Being without any real human interaction for (presumably) decades really does a number on your social skills. The fact that she has cue cards to read off of is both awesome (because it’s the show showing that social interaction isn’t as effortless for everyone as it is for some people) and hilarious, especially the parts of the note card that are so obviously One-One and she just reads them aloud completely straight and with the arm movements — it’s a golden scene. If only there was an entire season about Amelia.

One of these days, I’ll tone down my bitterness over Infinity Train‘s cancellation. Just not today.

I have Tuba’s lullaby stuck in my head and it’s been making me sad all day. In every other context, the song has been a catchy little short Tuba sings to calm Hazel and keep her happy. Once the full version is sung, it’s a song about not being in a hurry to grow up, to relax and play and just be a kid while the singer is around to take care of all the other stuff kids shouldn’t have to worry about. It reminds me of a somber mix of “You’ll Be In My Heart” from Disney’s Tarzan and “Take Your Sweet, Sweet Time” from Jungle Cubs, a Toon Disney cartoon spin-off of The Jungle Book, especially after “The Campfire Car”. I think “The Campfire Car” is the saddest episode in the entirety of Infinity Train as a show.

It’s time for main character backstories — sort of. We get Simon’s whole backstory, as it pertains to his character in Infinity Train, and hints of Grace’s. I can’t tell how intentional it is, but I find “The Debutante Car” and “The Chat Chalet Car” incredibly interesting as it relates to Grace and Simon, but not for the reasons one might think upon hearing me say this.
